About Us

Marple and District Probus Club

We are The Marple and District Probus Club and we meet at Marple Senior Citizens Hall on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month .

The dates for our Meetings can be found on the Meetings page together with our guest speaker programme

Our Club was formed in 1972, and Inaugural meetings, initiated  by the Rotary Club of New Mills and District, were held on 5th, 12th, 19th and 26th of January of that year.

Draft rules (2/2/72) limited the proposed Club to 40 members at first and set an annual subscription of £1, plus 25p for the Marple Senior Citizens Association, membership of which would allow free use of the Senior Citizens  Hall.   This additional levy was suggested by Fred Veal, who was then the Chairman of the Marple Senior Citizens Association.

In the beginning weekly meetings were held in February and March of that year, comprising talks by 4 Club members, and 2 given by outside Speakers.

Since those early days our club has gone from strength to strength, we still meet at the Senior Citizens Association Club in Marple War Memorial Park commencing at 10.15am with a break at 11.00am for a drink, a biscuit and friendly natter with other members. Our meetings generally end at 12 noon, and are held on the 2nd and 4th. Wednesday of the month.

Currently membership is by application. To join please attend one of our meetings and ask for the secretary who will guide you through the process. Membership is by application and prospective members need to be proposed by an existing member.

An annual Probus subscription of £10.00 is paid, together with £5.00 for membership of the Marple Senior Citizens Association and £4.00 thereafter, a total of £15.00 in the first year and £14.00 thereafter..

Members over the age of 90 years have free life membership.

As members of the Senior Citizens Association, members have access to all of their facilities and are able to take part in their activities if they wish.

A contribution of £1.00 is collected at each of our meetings.

The Club has a number of visits to interesting venues throughout the year. Transport is usually by coach from arranged pickup points, or public transport or private car, whichever is convenient on the day and Members can usually bring their families if they wish.

We have a Christmas meal and an annual Dinner at a local eating place.

We number some 100 members these days, and new members are always welcome to join our friendly club.

We are looking for new members at the moment, so if you are interested come along to one of our meetings and have a look at us.
